JOHN KEEL NOT AN AUTHORITY ON ANYTHING

Hartshorne, Oklahoma (7)

The last items in the “Hartshorne, Oklahoma” folder are the two letters Gordon Lore mentions in his NICAP report and a clipping about the sightings from the Oklahoma Journal. So, there you have it–how John conducted one of his early investigations.

  1. Since I have a Newspapers.com account I did a search in the Daily Oklahoman for 1965 and there are a number of articles about UFO sightings for late summer of that year. I suspect that Hartshorne was microcosm of a larger “flap”. Interesting stuff here!

  2. Forgive me for the off-topic comment but it appears the comments have been closed on the Mary Hyre post that would have been more appropriate. lol.

I’m trying to determine if there is an archive of Mary Hyre material or if she ever wrote to John Keel about the “Jericho Road Man-Bears” that some researchers have mentioned she was collecting stories about in 1964 with the intent of publishing them for a later story, but never got around to publishing. A lot of times these anecdotal references are simply “common knowledge” that no one’s bothered to verify one way or the other. I’m compiling a database of all known UFO/Creature reports in West Virginia to aid my own research. Plus I love monsters.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. As you might imagine, any search for monsters in Mason County, WV is automatically buried in Mothman results.

    Regards

  3. Tony — Unfortunately, I had to close the comments on older posts to control the torrents of spam.

I don’t know if there’s a Mary Hyre archive. Maybe Jeff Wamsley at the Mothman Museum in Point Pleasant would know. Have you checked the Gray Barker Collection in the Clarksburg Harrison Public Library? I’ve posted all of Mary Hyre’s letters and columns that John had in his files. 1964 was before he met her, so I’m afraid there’s nothing about that particular story. Good luck! Doug

  4. Clarence — It certainly sounds like it! I think it was a busy time for UFOs in general, which is what prompted John to start writing about them. I’m glad you find this stuff interesting! D
