Back in the day much of unusual behavior was thought to be “emotional” or “psychological” and that idea persisted into the 60’s. Psychosis can be caused by any number of brain disorders which are clearly organic. Schizophrenia which often manifests psychotic behavior is now seen as essentially a brain disorder. I give John some slack on this one since the old timers in psychiatry were still clinging to this idea when John wrote it.

That’s true. The understanding and treatment of mental illnesses have changed a lot over time. I don’t know when John wrote these, but my guess is sometime in the early ’70s, which was a while ago.
