Three Episodes of “Mack and Myer for Hire”

Ayr Here’s a last bit from the same folder of miscellaneous papers. A while ago, I posted a sample of John’s work for “Mack and Myer for Hire,” the TV show featuring Mickey Deems and Joey Faye. Here are three more excerpts from 1963: the beginnings of “Chimp Chumps,” “Muscle Mania,” and “Barbershop Boobery.” Note John’s bylines! Enjoy!

  1. From Mack and Meyer for Hire to The Mothman Prophecies. Wow, who’d have thought?

  3. Reading again MP’s for the umpteenth time I’m once again impressed by the author’s sheer skill in putting forth a story. His self-editing faculty was obviously operating at a high level, especially when a fine degree of compression and selection was necessary. Doug, is there any chance of your posting original drafts of MP or OTH?

  4. Ronald — I don’t have the typescripts of either MP or OTH in the files. I hope John was able to sell them to collectors. However, I’ve posted his notes from Point Pleasant and his correspondence with Mary Hyre, as well as the “Special Cases” files that provided material for the sections on Long Island. OTH began as a long article for Playboy, which was eventually rejected. I’ve posted some of his notes and correspondence about it, as well as some material on his proposed film about OTH. You can use the search box to find them.
