JOHN KEEL NOT AN AUTHORITY ON ANYTHING

Special File – Volume Three (7): A Letter to Mary Hyre (January 1, 1968)

http://avavolleyball.com/ava-grass-volleyball-program It’s a new year, and John writes Mary Hyre a letter about his reactions to the Silver Bridge collapse. He’s puzzled by phone disruptions in Point Pleasant, and curious about reports of a man in a plaid coat. Gray Barker, not surprisingly, denies any knowledge of “Jack Brown.” John hasn’t had much work, and is considering, reluctantly, writing something for the National Enquirer.

  1. I thought the detail of the checkered shirts was interesting.

  2. Sure would like to see a video of the CBS Evening News for December 15. I was home in Vermont from college for Christmas break and was watching the news (which I remember as starting at 6:00, but apparently actually started at 6:30 … that’s what happens to your memory after 50 years). As I recall, the newscast was almost finished when Cronkite was given a slip of paper and made one of those “this just in” insertions, “a bridge across the Ohio River has collapsed…” It’s a shame the newscast wasn’t archived; I’d love to see how flawed my memory actually is. Hell, I may have invented the entire memory.

  3. There is of course the tragic coincidence of the collapse of the bridge (Ponte Morandi) in Genoa, Italy on August 14th, the same week and 2 days after this blog article was posted. A similar number of people have died, it seems 38/39 confirmed deaths (at the time I post this). However between 10 and 20 people are still missing, so the final death toll will be higher than the Point Pleasant bridge disaster. Cars and trucks plunged and almost plunged into the water below, where people died, just like the Silver Bridge collapse. As with the Silver Bridge, lack of maintenance, oversight, structural flaws are being blamed, but a formal investigation is of course just beginning, if it has even begun. The wiki article here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ponte_Morandi

The bridge is named after its designer Riccardo Morandi. There is a further coincidence with Point Pleasant. The bridge in Genoa was opened on 4th September 1967 (check the wiki article). That’s a mere three months (3 months and 11 days exactly) before the Silver Bridge collapsed.
