The Bowery News<\/em> — originally the Hobo News<\/em> — was a kind of raffish paper that celebrated the culture of the Bowery.\u00a0 It included cartoons, verses, racing tips, and news\u00a0and gossip about hoboes, bums, panhandlers, barflies, hitch-hikers, tramps, pearl-divers (dishwashers), and the rest of\u00a0 “Society’s basement.”<\/p>\n

John wrote for it in his teens;\u00a0the photo shows him outside the office when he was nineteen.<\/p>\n

All of which leads us to a Keel bio and poem from the Bowery News<\/em>, December 15, 1948.\u00a0 The novel mentioned was West of Washington<\/em> Square<\/em> — lost long ago.\u00a0 And I assume that the joke that follows was just filler added by the editor.<\/p>\n
