Guben Here’s a brief book proposal, which seems to be from around 1966. It got no further than this, but shows John figuring out the clearest (and most commercial) way to organize his material. The report of Russian scientists obtaining a Yeti body is news to me; maybe some Yeti scholar out there has more information.
Please help me. I have just spent many hours on your site and I need to know more about the MIB. Do you have any more notes from Mrs. Hyre? I’m sCared and I don’t know why. Haven’t been sleeping. No sightings at all, but strange sounds. I cAnt tell if it’s my mind playing tricks, or I’m so busy ignoring the sounds that none of it is clear. I feel like something is happening. Need to read about Lanulos. Is that Fiction?

I feel like you know a lot more about Indrid Cold, and those that were hunting him down, the MIB.

I do have more letters from Mary Hyre; most of them were simply news about the people John befriended in Point Pleasant. I do think Lanulos was fiction; I don’t think Derenberger really went to a planet of nudists. I don’t have any explanation for the MIB; neither did John.
One thing John always said, though, was that “belief is the enemy.” The things that go bump in the night will take over your life if you pursue them. Don’t let them! And by all means, get some sleep; everybody needs sleep.

I appreciate the response, greatly. I did sleep last night, oddly enough. And felt fine all day. I Really appreciate that quote, too. I find it to be significant, especially for those that were negatively impacted by their encounters.
What of the men in black that visited Mary? Did she not ever publish extensively on those bizarre encounters?

There was one odd character who visited Mary, a very short man with thick glasses, who became fascinated with her fountain pen (John wrote about him in Chapter 8 of “The Mothman Prophecies”). He was all in blue, though, so I don’t know if he qualifies as a MIB; maybe he was a blue MIB. Mary wrote a regular column called “Where the Waters Mingle”; in the late ’60s, she did often write about Mothman and UFOs, but I’m not sure if she wrote about MIB. I’ll have to check. I’ve been meaning to post more of her columns, since I’m sure many Keel fans haven’t seen them. Hang in there!

I am wildly interested in anything regarding those that visited Mary. I’m doing my best to ‘not believe’ the legends of the mothman or the MIB, do you put any stock to them? I’m really not as crazy as I came off in earlier posts, it’s just something that tends to haunt me when I have nothing else to think about.
I long for knowledge yet dread it at the same time.
Do you believe any of what happened in VA 60’s?
I just feel like every conspiracy theory there ever was can be connected — and then that makes me think ‘isn’t that the idea?’
I would love, and maybe in private, or here, to hear another point of view from someone who knew someone who knew something about it (that’s long winded, I know, but it piques my interst)
I shouldn’t be afraid of anything like this, but I am. Curiosity killed the cat. And I feel like a pussy…

And to be clear I’m a college grad, and by far, could be considered no fool. For someone that posts so frequently on the topic, what is your stance?
I don’t claim to be afflicted by conspiracy theory, and take it that you are not either.
But I feel like legend of the grinning man is both real and relevant. What is your take on that?

I have no idea what really happened in Point Pleasant. John said that he felt that he never got to the bottom of it. I’m certain that there were some people who experienced things that frightened them; but I have no way of knowing what they actually saw. I find it helpful to remember that any sighting is a combination of a stimulus and a perception, and that perception is often neither objective nor uniform. These phenomena that we puzzle over often seem to be a product of human interaction with the earth, rather than material things. John pointed out that if Mothman were flesh and blood, he would have found Mothman poop, and other physical evidence. But he did think that there were electromagnetic oddities there, which he thought might have caused the surges of fear he felt in some areas. And some things (like strange phone calls) can probably be blamed on Gray Barker, who was known to play pranks.
The “paranormal” (not a useful term, really, since it just means anything we don’t think is “normal”) does seem to occur only to some people; some researchers have even tried to figure out the percentage. And if you pursue it, it will catch you, which has ruined the lives of many occultists, ufologists, and others.
So, I guess that’s as much of a stance as I have now…
