Andrew Colvin has assembled a choice selection of rare magazine articles by John Keel in Flying Saucer to the Center of Your Mind, now available through Amazon.  It includes articles from Saga, Saucer News, Men, Male, John’s own magazine Anomaly, and many others, as well as transcriptions of lectures.  The introductions are by Colvin, Gray Barker and Tessa B. Dick.

Colvin grew up in West Virginia, and has experienced its anomalies first-hand.  Those interested in Mothman know him from his books The Mothman’s Photographer I-III, The Mothman Speaks, and The Mothman Shrieks.  You can read an interview with him here.

  1. This looks awesome. John Keel has yet to get anywhere near the respect he deserves as a writer. His style was sometimes rough around the edges, but he dealt with IDEAS that are way beyond what almost anyone is writing about today. He really went beyond the “are UFOs astronauts from other planets?” paradigm and addressed the surreal nature of a much broader phenomenon and what it might mean. Can’t wait to get a copy.

  2. Love it! Great title. John was such a unique writer and thinker, and his work deserves to live forever. I’m buying this book. (By the way, Tessa B. Dick, who contributed to this book, is the widow of the late, celebrated science-fiction author Philip K. Dick. She’s a fascinating writer in her own right. Fans of Keel and/or Philip K. Dick should read her fascinating books.)

  3. Also by the way, this collection includes John’s 1987 article on Dick, “Was Philip K. Dick a Flake?”

  4. ANDY COLVIN, YOU ROCK! Thanks for this book of Keel’s writings. I am ordering my copy tomorrow! I love ” The Mothman Prophecies ” by John Keel, I have read it five times. I am a huge fan of PKD. I did not know Keel wrote about him, how awesome. I have read 3 of Andy’s mothman books, and Tessa’s book ” Firebright “.

Doug, thank you for this website. It is so exciting to see actual scanned letters and original writings. Incredible.

  5. Yes, Andy is an incredible guy. I first met him at MothFest 2009 in Point Pleasant, and have since exchanged a few emails, and comments on the Forteans West website. Back at MothFest 2003 I met Keel, and bought Andy’s cinema verite-style DVD documentary, THE MOTHMAN’s PHOTOGRAPHER. Andy’s work has been invaluable to the research for my nonfiction book, forthcoming in 2014.

    Thanks for informing us, Doug!

  6. I have long wanted to read some of Keel’s “old stuff” and am glad to see this posted. I’ve ordered my book. Good work!

  7. I am going warp speed to my lical bookstore tomorrow to order this book! Although I have many of the articles already, there can never be too much Keel on my shelf. And, a great, great cover. May this be the first of a series – Keel’s highly interesting articles in the old issues of Flying Saucer Review beg such s treatment.

    Best,

    Theo
