JOHN KEEL NOT AN AUTHORITY ON ANYTHING

“Stendek”

STENDEK1

John was living in Woodstock in 1973, and introduced himself to the local paper, the Woodstock Times, with a typically Keelian note.

The first column was published with the letter, the second (“UFOs over Woodstock”) in the next issue.  Both were light-hearted takes on subjects John treated more fully elsewhere.  Does anyone out there know if there were more?

And here’s the first one.  For the benefit of non-US readers, let me note that Agnew was then Vice President, and one of the more unpopular politicians of the time.

A Letter to “Gray Barker’s Newsletter” #6

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 10:47 pm

This letter was published in Gray Barker’s Newsletter, #6, April-May-June 1976. A few footnotes: Jennings Frederick claimed an alien contact in Fairmont, WV, in July 1968: a “vegetable man” who hypnotized him and took his blood. The Frank Gorshin movie was Invasion of the Saucer Men, from 1957. Jerome Eden was a ufologist and Reichian. James Moseley was one of John’s favorite targets: Coral Lorenzen was the head of APRO (Aerial Phenomena Research Organization), and may indeed have fallen out with Moseley; Joe Pyne was a TV host who specialized in ridiculing his guests, one of whom was Moseley. J. Allen Hynek was a prominent ufologist, known particularly for his role in Project Blue Book. Stendek, or Stendec, was a popular word among UFO buffs: it was the last word sent by the airliner Star Dust before it crashed in the Andes in 1947.

New and Improved!

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 1:33 pm

As you may have noticed, I’ve changed to a different theme for this site.  This one permits wider and more legible scans: the former one had frustrating limitations on image size.  With the change, I can now post typewritten pages that can actually be read by the humanoid eye.  I’ll also be going back and upgrading earlier posts, so do browse through the backlog.  I’ve just revamped the unpublished 12th issue of Anomaly, and redone an earlier post on John’s comic book work: you can now enjoy the whole story of “Love in Greenwich Village.”

ADDENDUM:  I’ve added better scans of the first exchange of letters with Ivan Sanderson, and of the Shavertron interview.

ANOTHER ADDENDUM:  And the first “Stendek” column.

John A. Keel: A Bibliography

[This bibliography is a continuing work in progress; suggestions, additions, and corrections are welcome.]

Przeworsk BOOKS

[I’ve included here JAK’s introductions to others’ books and his contributions to anthologies. Some of his books were reprinted under different titles; I’ve listed those separately. I’ve also listed translations separately, since the titles to those sometimes vary considerably from the original. If the foreign title is the same (like the French edition of Jadoo), or if I can’t read it (like the Japanese editions), I’ve listed it under the original. Good luck!]

SCRIPTS FOR AMERICAN FORCES NETWORK

[JAK wrote a variety of material for the AFN. Many of his scripts were for continuing series. “Command Conference” and “Command Theater” dramatized material from “Troop Topics”: instructive pamphlets on military issues. JAK often turned them into science fiction or comedy, often with the continuing character Private Mulvaney. “Take Ten” was a series of brief fillers. “Around the Town” gave information on film screenings and other events in Frankfurt, presented as dialogue between soldiers. Many of his scripts were also holiday specials. I’ve added a few descriptions, where that seems useful.]
