Special File – Volume Three (17): Special Report 4/12/68

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 10:39 am

can you buy disulfiram over the counter John concludes his “Special File” with a “Special Report” about appearances of a Keel double. Since it’s signed, dated, and has a return address, I suppose it was meant for publication, or at least distribution among his fellow ufologists. Bound into the file after this are photocopies of two of Appell’s letters from November ’67, and a questionnaire Appell supposedly answered (“QA-5”).

  1. So Jaye did leave the station in !968? That’s pretty interesting.

  2. Maybe her show didn’t last long, and that’s why it’s hard to find info about it.

  3. Yeah that’s what I would have guessed.

  4. John’s pen names always so droll, and funny, and I got the same laugh out of the hippie on the phone. It seems like the same sense of humor. i mean i can just see him doing that. Would he have, do you think Doug? These notes seem like they are from around the bend where creativity and hoaxing meet. Roommate Blakiston? Has he ever been mentioned before? Mr Smythe, epileptic baker and UFO researcher? Sounds made up. John said once Appel or someone wanted tapes of his voice? remember? He said he wouldn’t provide it because he feared they would be used to incriminate him. Jaye asked for those. Might have happened like John feared back then, or it’s his neurotic fixation and/or these are short story ideas…. Maybe John had a doppleganger or an impersonator. Around here there was someone in the late 80’s who went around dressed as Warhol. Thanks, Doug

  5. FWIW, much of this portion of the file made it to Chapter 17 of Mothman Prophecies. George Smythe is referred to as ‘George Clark’ and Blakiston is referred to as an ‘old army buddy, a serious, quiet man who worked in advertising.’ He is not named. Maybe JAK didn’t want to use Smythe’s surname in the book.

  6. That may be the case J.P. I’m still trying to figure out how all of these notes fit into John’s books. Based on these notes and the books it seems John gained a confirmation bias on UFOs and other paranormal events as ultra terrestrial. Jacques Vallee is the same way.

  7. Well, I imagine if John imitated a hippie on this phone, he would have mentioned it in his private notes. David Blakiston is mentioned earlier in these notes, but I think only by his first name. The request for a tape of John’s voice is odd for a number of reasons. For one thing, John gave many talks and appeared often on the radio, including on Jaye’s show. Couldn’t she just have taped her own show?

  10. Information about George Smythe can be most easily found on line in MEN IN BLACK, ALIENS AMONG US (1996) by Tim G. Beckley pages 23-24 etc. It is contained in the article “Men in Black, Cadillacs, Doppelgangers and Laser Beams…you name it and we have it in Jersey” written by the 1960s+- UFO researcher John J. Robinson, assistant editor of SAUCER NEWS. Robinson and his wife Mary were involved in the noted Jersey City NJ MIB photo case. Having grown up in northern NJ, and having visited relatives Jersey City as a child during that time period has made me interested in this case.
