JOHN KEEL NOT AN AUTHORITY ON ANYTHING

A Letter from Mary Hyre, March 24, 1968

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 12:13 am

This is the last letter in John’s folder of Mary Hyre’s letters. She wrote it on March 24, 1968, and mailed it the next day, John’s birthday. She died on February 15, 1970. I assume they kept in touch by phone; they may have written other letters that John didn’t keep in this folder.

John wrote “MIB” on the envelope: the letter does describe a visit from a “strange visitor” with an intense interest in UFOs. There’s also a report on strange phone calls, and an update on Mothman witnesses Roger and Linda Scarberry.

Heh. Sounds like Saturday night! (And relatedly, isn’t the insinuating double meaning in asking a respectable woman if she’d been driving around in cars with John Keel pretty hilarious?)

I’m going to miss these letters. They’re like little glimpses of some quirky dramedy series about the lives and loves of semi-rural Southerners during an inexplicable UFO flap.

  2. I’ll miss these too, Doug. I was aware of the Roger and Linda Scarberry problems, but was sad to read just how deep they went. Another aspect of how so-called paranormal phenomena can affect lives.

  3. I like these letters, too. They give a closeup look at a flap area, and Mary Hyre was such a lively and endearing character.

  4. Any further insights into who the bizarre looking man was? Could he have been albino? Ithe strange visitors and phone weirdness very curious. Was the UFO flap in point pleasant nationally known? She seems very concerned about johns safety. Was it just this weird looking man that got her spooked, asking questions about him or had something happened in particular ?

  6. I have no further info on that strange visitor. There were some articles on Mothman in a few magazines, but I don’t think there was that much interest at the time. John did think that he might be in danger: He was finding out creepy things, and his phone and mail were being tampered with. Nothing happened, fortunately. I hope you enjoy the Adjective!

  7. Doug, I just got back from visiting Point Pleasant WV. for the first time while on a side trip while visiting my Uncle in Indianapolis. I live in Chicago. I was surprised to find the Mothman museum which was actually quite good and only $3.00! It covered the strange happenings at the time, the Silver Bridge disaster and the movie with Richard Gere. They gave me a free handout map of the sites that John describe in his book and it was so cool going to the places that I read in my youth and thinking these are the same roads John followed chasing the bizarre happenings almost 50 years ago. There were some letters displayed that John wrote over the years to some of the locals and in reading them you can tell John’s genuine concern about what was happening to them and it wasn’t just a reporter chasing a story. Next week will be the Mothman festival and the curator said the town will be packed and there will be a line to get into the museum. I left feeling very satisfied and comforted that John Keel will be remembered at least here.

  8. Sounds great! Unfortunately, I’ve never had the free time or money to go to Point Pleasant. And yes, John did make friends there.

  9. Being a Michigander the license plate number piqued my interest. The “JV” plate would most likely have come from the Grand Rapids area, if that has any deeper meaning I don’t know.
