JOHN KEEL: NOT AN AUTHORITY ON ANYTHING

A Letter from Mary Hyre, April 14, 1967

I’ll continue to post Mary Hyre’s letters to John Keel; they provide some of the back story to The Mothman Prophecies, as UFO and Mothman sightings crossed her desk at The Athens Messenger.  This next letter, from April 14, 1967, catches up John on recent UFO reports, crowds gathering at the TNT area, and a butterfly as big as a car.  I can’t identify the Pittsburgh contactee that she asks about; maybe some ufologist out there can.

  1. Hi Doug:
Again, very interesting material filling in the back-story to THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES, Mary Hyre’s life at the time, and Point Pleasant itself.

I might have–buried here somewhere–a reference to the “indian” in Pittsburgh. I lived there for 7 years, and gathered a lot of stuff. Talked to UFO investigator Stan Gordon (who lived not far from me)a few times, and dived into the lore of southwest Pennsylvania–as you probably know, a very active region. In 2001, there was a so-called thunderbird sighting (covered by Stan)in Greensburg, less than 5 miles from my home.

If I find this reference, I’ll send it your way.

    Best,
    Bill

  2. Thanks, Bill! I didn’t recognize that Indian story from the contactee literature.
