Welcome to the John Keel site. I’m Doug Skinner, a friend of John’s for many years; I’ve started this site to give his fans a place to find a reasonably accurate biography and bibliography, and semi-regular postings on his life and work.

The biography and bibliography are still in progress; I’ll keep adding to them as the site grows. Meanwhile, check back, comment, suggest, complain, and steer clear of those ultraterrestrials.

  6. i wonder if you can answer a question for me? was mr keel ever under contract to (or even ever contacted by) the penn state paranormal group to speak at their summer convention? a couple of years back ( 2007 ? ) they were using his name in their web ads as the headliner speaker for their conference. i IMMEDIATELY purchased tickets, afraid to wait and miss the opportunity to hear him…. $400 later and only three days before the advertised date they announced he would be unable to speak due to poor health. …this was unfortunate and certainly would not have been their fault, but when i spoke to penn state paranormal inquiring about a refund it became apparent (mainly because they admitted it!!) that while they may have once spoken to mr. keel, he was never under contract to appear and in fact they had only tried in earnest to again get in touch with him the week before the event.
…..they were using his name to sell tickets without having ever had any real commitment on his part to appear. i thought this was so awful…they defrauded those who bought tickets and used mr. keel’s name to do it.
if you know and if i’m wrong about this please tell me, i’ve been nursing a grudge against penn state paranormal (of A&E direct to on-demand fame) ever since. thanks patty

  7. Patty — I can understand why you’re upset. I remember John telling me that he’d been invited to speak at Penn State; and wanted to go, because they’d offered a decent honorarium. His doctor, though, told him he shouldn’t. But I don’t know if he ever received a contract. At any rate, I hope you got a refund!

  11. Thanks for your great website. I was friends with Keel from I guess 1993. I recently read on the old Mirage Men blog (https://miragemen.wordpress.com/2010/07/08/on-john-keel/) that Keel collaborated on pranks with Moseley and Barker, and that they co-created much of the MiB myth consciously. That was definitely not the vibe I got from Keel in life and I just asked Tim Beckley, who knew all three of those guys and says Keel would never have collaborated on pranks with Moseley. You are also referenced on that page, and I was wondering if you had an opinion or any facts on this matter. If you don’t want to answer publicly, I can be reached at peterbernard at peterbernard dot com. I haevn’t read your entire site yet, it’s possible you’ve already answered this question, so I’ll try to search some more. Thanks again.

  12. Peter — No, I don’t think John ever did anything like that. He was exasperated at Moseley’s and Barker’s pranks, once referring to them as “happy horseshit.” His files are full of his attempts to eliminate hoaxes from his data. He did sometimes pass along a nonsense message to one of his contacts, to test his or her response. But he certainly didn’t create the MIB myth: it was already there; he just reported it. John could be mistaken and overly credulous at times, but I don’t think he made things up.

  13. Thank you very much for getting back to me on that so quickly, and thank you for corroborating what Tim and I remember. Maybe the Mirage Men guys are joking or trolling for fun! Thanks again.

  15. Doug,
Thank you for maintaining this website of John’s work. In the past year I have come across correspondence between John and several members of SITU (Society for the Investigation of the Unknown). I have had the pleasure of knowing Bob and Nancy Warth who published the Pursuit journal after Ivan Sanderson passed away back in the 1970’s. Bob produced that journal until 1991 (I have all but one of two copies of Pursuit). Consequently, after Bob passed away several years ago (my dad actually was friends with Bob from Bendix days), his wife Nancy gave me a good portion of correspondence that was acquired over the years including letters from John. I too would like to help preserve the work that these folks did over the years including Bob, Ivan and John, etc. I don’t know if these letters (most being somewhat “tame” by comparison relating to interactions between John and Bob, et al) might be of interest to you. Please feel free to contact me should you like to discuss this issue.

    Joe
